What is drawing, anyway?
To Draw (verb):
-
to pull or cause to move continuously toward or after a force applied in advance: "draw your chair up by the fire"
-
to design or describe in detail: "draw comparisons"
-
to produce a likeness or representation of by making lines on a surface www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/draw
Drawing is so much more than just lines on paper. It's a way to express ideas, emotions, and creativity.
Drawing can be a way to draw conclusions - to pick the right line to express what you are observing - but drawing can also be a way to drag out questions. Are you really seeing what's in front of you? Or are you exploring something else? Do you care?
Regardless, there's no single "right" way to draw. Our classes encourage you to experiment with different mediums and styles, helping you find your unique artistic voice.
Why study Drawing?
Drawing is a foundational skill in the world of visual arts, but its benefits extend far beyond that. Here are just a few reasons why studying drawing can be so enriching:
-

-
Boost Observation Skills: Learning to draw is also learning to observe. You'll begin to notice details that you may have previously overlooked, improving your ability to see and appreciate the world around you.
-
Mindful Practice: Drawing can be a calming and meditative process, allowing you to focus and disconnect from everyday stress. It’s all about being in the moment.
-
Develop Visual Communication: Whether you’re an artist, designer, or hobbyist, drawing helps you communicate visually, translating ideas into tangible form.
-
Build Confidence: Overcoming the challenges of drawing can boost your confidence, helping you grow as an artist and individual.
-
Creative Freedom: There’s no right or wrong in drawing, giving you the freedom to experiment, play, and find your personal style.

Some classes will be taken in the studio, and others will take us on ‘research trips’ within walking distance of Assembly Art. There will be lots of drawing from observation and imagination.
It will be social, with lots of discussion, and feedback will be geared towards helping artists grow confidence. There will be no assessment of skill, but permission to experiment - which is the fuel for creativity, personality, and style.
