Service Description
*Who is this course for?* Saturday Ceramics provides space for beginner and intermediate potters to develop their understanding and skill using clay. The group is a mix of complete beginners and those with more experience. We encourage participants to work together, and it’s a really friendly bunch! *What are the key skills or techniques students will learn in your course?* Each set of 6 sessions is adapted to those who sign up: all should come away feeling like they are more confident using clay. Beginning participants are encouraged to start by following a set of 3 projects suggested by the facilitator, designed to introduce them to the basics, and those with more experience are welcome to work on their own projects during the sessions. We cover basic and intermediate hand building pottery skills, such as pinching, coiling and slab building. The use of colour in techniques such as Nerikomi, decals and Sgraffito, and how to make and experiment with glazes. *How long is the course, and what is the structure of each session?* Saturday Ceramics runs from 10-1 every Saturday morning, term time. If you’re a beginner or a regular, we recommend signing up for a set of 6 consecutive classes to get the most rounded experience at the best value. Those with more experience are welcome to drop in as and when they’re free at a slightly higher cost. Each session starts with a review of the previous week's work & what's come out of the kiln. Tea & Coffee provided. You'll have about 2 hours to work on your own projects and half an hour to clean up. *Are there any materials or equipment that students need to bring?* All equipment, clay and firing costs are included. You don’t need to bring anything to take part. Having said that – you may like to bring tools or materials once you have a particular project in mind. Examples from previous participants include plant material like leaves/bark to create texture/images in the clay, cookie cutters, extra thin brushes, and specialist clay/particular glazes they’d like to try. Saturday Ceramics is a place you can experiment. *What’s the maximum class size?* The maximum class size for Saturday Ceramics depends on the experience level of the participants. We have room for at most 4 beginners and 6 more experienced participants, allowing plenty of space on the tables for hand building and assistance for those who are trying out a new technique or idea.
